Day 9

Homemade breky again today, I’d like to say it as a late start, but it wasn’t. It was slow tho 😆 Philly stayed up & watched the 49ers play, game got done around 2am our time 😳 I am not that committed…to just about anything! We headed downtown to meet our realtor at the internet provider, she’s helping us upgrade our plan. The place looked like a bank/municipality. When they say addresses don’t really exist here, they mean it. Our internet account is attached to our modem, not our physical address. This week I’m going to start digging into how to get mail here, I’m setting my expectations at level 0. While we were downtown we hit a few shops, snagged a new bag so I can carry more reusable bags with us 🤪, grabbed a coffee, wandered thru a beautiful sweets shop (brought a few home of course), & restocked our fresh veg/fruit inventory. For dinner we went thru the alley just one block over, to an Italian restaurant. I was needing to get some pasta, & their ravioli w/shrimp hit! We had their caprese salad, & honorary fries, the basket of bread they brought was like the “pizza bread” we had in Croatia.., UNBELIEVABLE. When we checked out, they had a little dog statue holding packets of sugar. Reminded me of Reesy. I sure miss my girl, she’s at casa de Grandmaw, living her best life before her big journey here. I’m anxious for the travel, & how she will handle things here, but I know we will figure it out ♥️

Day 9

Day 8

It’s hard to cut the clips down to just a minute, is somewhere 2 or under ok?? ⏳

Just a beautiful morning, brought the keys back to the Airbnb hosts from the first stay. Grabbed coffee at Deja Vu AND bought some of his oil (huge ass bottle) & olives ($19 total)…so freaking yummy. He greeted us when we came in like we were old friends. ♥️

It was busy along the Lungomare, people walking, sitting, kids running on the beach, it was great seeing so much action! We don’t know if it was the sun or Sunday? Maybe both! I made breaky with all the awesome things we’ve picked up over the last few days, it was wonderful. Then we shopped the neighborhood, literally just within our square block, & got a ton of our list knocked out. We discovered a large market behind us, & it will make it totally feasible to not need to go downtown frequently for grocery & home products if we don’t want to! We stopped at Big Scoop, as we’ve been eyeing it since we arrived. It’s like a lot of places we’ve been in here, like a dance club 😂 jamming music, fur/velvet seating, neon lights, it’s fun! It’s overstimulating as hell, but fun 😝. Yes, we had dessert first, then went back & heated up some pizza & spinach burek we bought at the bakery next door. First time burek experience met the hype! Now let’s see if I’ll be awake for kick-off with Philly for the 49ers game, I’m guessing no 🤪

Day 8

Home Goods Haul
via Haso

When we were downtown yesterday we started ticking off our “make this house a home” list, at a larger store called Haso Market (groceries on the main floor, home goods on the second). The apartment came with most essentials to get us going, so thankfully we aren’t starting from scratch. Here’s a little peak at some of the goodies we snagged, not pictured: large sherpa throw blanket $22.89 & a large quilted blanket w/pillow cases for our “double”(roughly a queen) bed $42.17

The staff were incredibly helpful. When we got upstairs we went right to the drink ware that we could see, & a gentleman came over…

Him: “you need something fancy for special dinner?”

Us: “no, just everyday”

Him: “come with me, for not so expensive one…”

In a VERY easy upsell opportunity, where we have no clue what there is, or the reasonable price point, he opted to make our literal first impression of the store an awesomely genuine one!

Day 7

And we got a double length clip today! Roll that beautiful bean footage…

We discovered our fancy new pad has an automated shade! Panda enjoyed having the day presented to her in this dramatic fashion. She also stayed watch with me as we confirmed the wash was doing what it was supposed to for our initial run. Philly got me the biggest orange from the stand downstairs, unreal how juicy it was, had to be eaten over the sink! So pumped to try more fruit! We set up laundry shop in our bedroom, since it was forecasted to rain quite a bit again this afternoon…my list of cons is pretty short but I missed a dryer today. I know I’ll acclimate. We cranked the heat, & PanPan hunkered in to the sauna.

We headed downtown early to get our shopping done & hopefully beat the wetness, which we did. We hit the big store, Haso, grocery on the main floor & home goods on the second. We struck success with nearly too many things on our list & had to quit since our bodies are our means of transport. We will return early next week for more goodies from our list!

Got back to Lungomare, grabbed lunch at Namma. Damn it’s good. And we found a microwave in a cupboard in the apartment, so we successfully shared the meal AND brought home half, in a take away box! Before going up, we ran into the market across the street from our place & grabbed some goodies! I am elated to be equipped to make us breaky in the morning. We will still be headed to Deja Vu for coffees 🙌

Possible apartment tour tomorrow?! We are still pretty tuckered from dragging everything over & into the new place, our bodies are in a little shock from all the go-go-go! Hopefully we will start gaining some stamina for all the trekking.

Honestly feels like week three, in a good way! Started early today, grabbed breaky at Deja Vu. I LOVE the olives the owner serves, he actually shared some videos of where his olive farm is. Obviously we will be buying his olives & olive oil asap. We took the bus downtown to meet our realtor, they notarize just about every legal document here, so it was another first-time Albanian experience. Stopped at the pet store to make sure we could get a lead on some Reesy food. This was a major stressor in the planning process because of her nasty allergies & IBS, the window for nourishment & reaction is narrrrooooww. So it’s kind of gotta be thee food. And lookie lookie! I also had some great folks that had replied to a post many many months ago that were over here already, that helped me have certainty it would be here! (Thanks Kelly & Martha) The sky was different today, we got to see a bit more of her beauty, it was magical. Got the keys to our new digs, & schlepped our butts off getting everything rolled over. With a celebratory Burger King dinner 🤣👑 Having it just downstairs was handy, when I was on a mission to get us moved in & unpacked tonight! Everything is roughly in place, & we’ve got a decent list for shopping over the weekend to make things more functional & homey for us ♥️ I realized as I was organizing the entry way, that this is our first home together. We’ve lived in his house, & back at my old studio, but how wild to have OUR first home be across the ocean, in the midst of our biggest dream come to life. Woof…feeling pretty fucking grateful right now! 🥹🏠

Much colder today, high of 50 with more bouts of rain…even a little sleet here & there! We certainly didn’t let it dampen our plans. We did our second walk-thru & said “let’s do it” to a great apartment this morning! Excited to show you! #mtvcribs A celebratory breakfast just across the street from our new place, avocado toast sandwich for me, & Albanian pancakes for Philly. Basically fry bread from my assessment, served room temp, with fig jam & honey…he assured me this was the beginning of a “good thing” with this new food discovery. We then ventured to the pharmacy just under our new place, to see if we could scout out our plan for the prescriptions we will need to fill in a few months…& wouldn’t you know, they had them in stock, ready for purchase, no ‘script needed, for pennies. I thought Philly was going to do a heel click when we left! Big relief, another easy transition, checked off the list. We then snagged the bus, & headed only a couple minutes to downtown. Wanted to get our bearings on the public transit & the bigger stores, so once we get into the new place & make a list of needs/supplies/a few wants, we can head on a shopping venture with confidence. Saw the football ⚽️ stadium, next home game being in a couple weeks, we will be there! Checked out a few stores, & then hopped back on the bus…not before getting pretty damp. Philly is working in the afternoons, so I finished tidying up our gaggle of luggage for the (hopefully tomorrow’s) big move! For dinner we double dipped at Chick’n Fork, as the place I had scouted on Google before leaving the Airbnb was closed, & we really enjoyed it the other day when we went!

While the news yesterday absolutely rocked my heart, I’ve told myself to just keep swimming. Others, unfortunately do not have that privilege, & I acknowledge that too. I wish better for humanity. I will keep carving out sunshine, & have hope that the tides of good will rise ♥️ In the mean time, do what you need to for your peace, joy, & safety.

Day 4 y’all!

Winter here means a little wind & a little rain, & there’s been a bit of that since we arrived! We began our day with another trip to Deja Vu (so punny 🤣), seemingly our favorite spot for breakfast! We looked at one last apartment for our long-term rental, I think we’ve narrowed it down & will do one more walk-thru tomorrow of our favorite in the morning! We stopped on our walk back for dinner, I got to pick out my fish from the ice chest! How freaking cool is that!? I chose a little sea bream & threw in a langoustine for extra fun! I got them grilled, ahhhmazing. Philly got the shrimp bao buns, & really enjoyed them too! We’ve been eating not-so-adventurously, because we wanted to wait until we were feeling a bit more rested etc. to fully enjoy it…I’m so glad we did! I have put together a list of cool things I’d like to do here, & catching my own sea bream to cook myself, is high on the list, especially now!

Hopefully we will be in our new “home”, soon! An apartment tour has been requested, so we will make our own version of cribs when we get there! 🤣

Day 4 y’all!

Winter here means a little wind & a little rain, & there’s been a bit of that since we arrived! We began our day with another trip to Deja Vu (so punny 🤣), seemingly our favorite spot for breakfast! We looked at one last apartment for our long-term rental, I think we’ve narrowed it down & will do one more walk-thru tomorrow of our favorite in the morning! We stopped on our walk back for dinner, I got to pick out my fish from the ice chest! How freaking cool is that!? I chose a little sea bream & threw in a langoustine for extra fun! I got them grilled, ahhhmazing. Philly got the shrimp bao buns, & really enjoyed them too! We’ve been eating not-so-adventurously, because we wanted to wait until we were feeling a bit more rested etc. to fully enjoy it…I’m so glad we did! Day 3

Our sleep schedule hasn’t quite gotten on track, so it was a late & slow start today. PanPan really enjoys surveying the outdoors from the living room window, especially hearing the Winter wind, she wants to know “what the ruckus is”. We went just a few doors down to Chick’n Fork for lunch, it was awesome. We have not had a bad meal, actual I’d say we’ve had delicious food 100% so far. Their funny wall decor was right up my alley 🤣. I had the meatballs, they were marinated, grilled, & seasoned, very good Greek flavors. Phillip had the chicken pita. Only thing I’ll say is portion sizes feel XL-American. …so we need to figure out how to share a meal, or get bigger stomachs! We also have fallen for their Lemon & Orange sodas, think San Pellegrino, but milder. We looked at another long-term apartment option today, hoping one more tomorrow, & then be ready to sign a lease by Thursday. All of the realtors have been immensely kind & helpful, especially with our many unrelated questions (same with restaurant staff). We finished the day with some treats we picked up last night & were too full to eat then 😍 The Biscoff was a team favorite.

We had a delicious breakfast to start our busy day. Did a little shopping to grab some necessities at the market next to our Airbnb. Checked out 3 apartments for our long-term stay. Walked, walked, walked. Spent quite a bit of down time trouble shooting our phones (please hit us up on WhatsApp). Went all the way up the Lungomare & grabbed an awesome early dinner of salad, pizza, & fries. In between things, I did our first load of European laundry & hung it to dry on the terrace. Once we settle in, I’ll work on our travel days video, & some other fun things we have planned for content!

A one minute glance at our day, here in Vlorë!

Tomorrow we depart MN.
We are so grateful to have his parents driving us to Chicago, so our kitty can have less plane stress. And to my Mom for taking care of our pumpkin in the meantime, before her big adventure over the pond. Everything the last year & half has fallen into place near perfectly. It feels surreal that all the planning, research, & lifelong dreaming, has turned “one day” into “day one”. When you fully grasp that this life is truly yours, & time is a brilliant privilege…this ride becomes more urgent & more wild. Full ass heart ♥️

What a weird time.

To choose a path that’s littered with grief, the destination must be ripe with joy & adventure.

We feel awfully special to have so many beautiful friendships that make this journey feel incredibly supported, even tho we know it’s laced with grief.

This past weekend, our Iowa 🖤💛 family & friends gathered to wish us well on our adventure! We chose a place for fun, The Operating Room, in West Des Moines! Games, great food & drinks, & exciting questions about our plans overseas. We certainly felt the love.

A friend mentioned a movie quote last week, that I’ve been carrying around with me as there are a lot of mixed emotions with these final experiences in this chapter…“It's better to be the one leaving, than the one being left”. It sums up the heaviness mixed with excitement that surrounds this move, for us, & for those that love us ♥️ We are just so damn proud & excited to be able to do this, & have the support we do!

Let’s talk about the personal item bag…or as I’m un-lovingly referring to it as, the “American Doll Bag”. 🎒

We’ve recently booked a couple Wizz air flights & when I say travel is wildly less expensive in Europe, I mean $30 flights. The last few flights we’ve taken in the US, have been hundreds 😳

The real trick to the discount airlines like Wizz & Ryan, is packing light. As their baggage costs can be HIGH! Since our plan is 4-day length adventures, the stars should align for packing needs! Right?!

So I did the research & ordered us some backpacks that fit the personal item requirements, & when they arrived, I was not prepared. It’s a “cute” size, ya know? For a couple outfits, medications, makeup…for a human, not a doll, right??

So I researched & also ordered some compression packing cubes, & will just hope 🙏 that my ‘minimalist transition’ will have taken full effect by the time our first flight to London happens in February! And dress in layers right? 🤣
